MEP M. Kyrkos spoke during the plenary session regarding the Armenian genocide (100 years).
"The 20th century brought the collapse of the Ottoman Empire and the birth of modern Turkey. One of the darkest moments of this era is the loss of 1.5 million Armenians - 100 years ago. And it was not young soldiers - like the ones that are lost by millions at the fields of the great War - but hundreds of thousands families which were wiped by deportation and death marches through mountains and deserts.
Let us today begin the discussion, so that president Erdogan continues last year's unfinished step, to recognise Turkey's responsibilities for crimes against the Armenians, and continue even further with the help of Turkish civil society. This will revitalise the Agreement of 2009, significantly enhancing security, cooperation and stability in the area of the South Caucasus.
We, the European Parliament, do not publish a punitive resolution, but contribute in our own way, to the overcoming of contradictions. Contradictions which will be over, only by the needed bravery of political leaders".
